I have traveled to 43 countries as a wheelchair user, and there have been so many occasions where just the ability to go up one step has made such a huge difference in what I have been able to see and do. In many cases, my accessible tour guides have brought their own lightweight portable ramps with them to help me. In January 2019, I brought my own portable ramp on a Caribbean cruise, and it made a huge difference in my ability to enjoy the sights and shops in Cartagena (Colombia), where accessibility is minimal. Here, I would like to offer some suggestions for great portable ramps you can take with you on your next trip to help you overcome just that one step.
Drive Medical Single-Fold Portable Ramp
This wheelchair and scooter ramp by Drive Medical is designed for transitioning a wheelchair or scooter from one surface height to another. The durable, folding, lightweight construction allows for the ramp to be easily transported in its carry bag. This ramp was especially designed with perforated slots to keep water from collecting on the ramp and ensuring users safety while in use. It comes in five sizes, from 2′ to 6′ (I recommend 3′ for travel), and has a weight capacity of 600 lbs. The 3′ version weighs 20 lbs and has a carry handle.
Titan Non-Skid Aluminum Briefcase Ramp
The Titan Ramps 3’ traction ramp is perfect for safely walking or rolling up a step without worry of slippage on its high traction surface. The 30” wide surface accommodates most wheelchairs, scooters and walkers comfortably. The handle and lightweight design make it easy to conveniently and securely carry around and store, as you would a briefcase. The safest and most secure placement is over a single step to prevent exceedingly steep inclines and the possibility of tipping. The Titan ramp is available in multiple lengths (from 2′ to 10′), has a weight capacity of 500 lbs, and the 3′ version weighs 25 lbs.

This also provides the assurance that the ramp will hold its rated capacity. The ramp width is 30″ and designed to work with any wheel configuration of wheelchair or scooter. Ramps come complete with safety instruction video and security pins for additional safety. This ramp is available in multiple lengths, has a weight capacity of 800 lbs, and weighs only 15 lbs.
